These ancient volcanic hills are known to have a variety of Obsidian, including: mahogany, red, flame, midnight lace, jet black, pumpkin, brown, rainbow, gold sheen, silver sheen, green, lizard skin, snowflake and more. Miriam believes the stones she has are from Glass Buttes, Oregon.
In the United States, it is found on the West Coast, an area with high levels of tectonic activity. Where is Snowflake Obsidian found? Snowflake Obsidian is found in many areas of the world where volcanic activity has taken place. The necklace may also be shortened or lengthened by Custom Order. The four antiqued Sterling Silver Beads are 9x15mm. The larger carved antiqued Sterling Silver Bead is 8x20mm Snowflake obsidian with fabulous snowflakes, set with swirls of black and white czech beads and silverplate wire. Obsidian Barrels are approximately 10x12mm. Brown Snowflake Obsidian rectangular nuggets are 13x20mm. Full length of the necklace, including the clasp is 23.5 inches. The name comes from the Obsius, a Roman who is credited with discovering a similar stone in Ethiopia. Because of its hardness, Obsidian is believed to have been used during the Stone Age to form weapons. The gray and creamy white snowflakes are called Phenocrysts, large sphere like particles of needle shaped Cristobalite, a type of quartz, which resemble snowflakes.
Obsidian stones are naturally strong and highly polished. Geologists call these stones Tectonic or Volcanic Jasper, more commonly known as Obsidian Jasper.
